Eco Schools is the largest environmental schools programme in the world and is operated in England by the charity Keep Britain Tidy.
We are currently busy renewing our annual Eco Schools application for 2022!

Environmental Review
We have recently completed our Environmental Review which helped us to formulate an Action Plan for 2021-2022.
Eco Committee
Each class have elected an Eco representative to help form Our Eco-Committee. We meet regularly and promote Eco activities in school and address issues raised on our most recent Environmental Review.

Eco Schools cover 10 Topics:-
Biodiversity
Wilderness Schooling- This a is a 7-week programme working with children identified by class teachers and school SENDco. Focusing on the children’s confidence and social interaction whilst incorporating Maths, Science and English using the outdoors as the classroom. Wilderness Schooling is run and managed by education charity Northeast Wellbeing and is delivered by a team of highly experienced teachers and outdoor education practitioners. (Ongoing)
Allotment Club- Weekly afterschool club. During this time, the decisions of what we do, what we grow and the maintenance of the allotment will be completely under their control. With the hope of creating a space that the rest of the school and community can be proud of. (Ongoing)
Curriculum Provision - (see curriculum map) Teachers enhance the curriculum by visiting the school garden, local park, Burn Valley Wood and organisations such as SummerHill Visitor Centre (visit and outreach), Salthome RSPB Nature Reserve and Teesmouth Nature Reserve. (ongoing)

Outdoor Classroom Day 2021
Bug Hotel - Nursery Garden Autumn 2 2021. Children help to build the new habitat to encourage wildlife into their garden.
Tree planting - The gardening club planted trees in our school garden (donated from Summerhill Visitor Centre). EYFS also planted Oak and Rowan saplings in their nursery garden. (Summer 2021)

Energy
Switch off fortnight - Class Energy Monitors to ensure devices are switched off. (15/11/21 & 22/11/21)
Automatic computer switch off daily at 6pm. (Autumn 2 2021)
CO2 monitors - In classrooms to ensure adequate ventilation. Eco Teams to collect readings. (November 2021)

School Choir - Our school Choir perform annually to our local residential care home. They also perform at local supermarkets to raise money for a chosen charity. (ongoing)

Healthy Living
School Meals - Children are offered a range of healthy food including fruit and vegetables for lunch which reflect the national initiative of ’healthy eating’ There is a daily vegetarian option. (ongoing)
Fruit and Vegetable scheme (SFVS) for children aged 4-6 years. Government funded fruit/vegetable provided daily. (ongoing)
Nursery Milk Scheme - Provided daily for children in EYFS. (ongoing)
Cooking Club - Weekly cooking sessions after school for Y2 children. (ongoing)
School Garden - Children across school use the school garden to grow and harvest their own fruit and vegetables. Nursery have a designated space within the nursery garden which they use to plant seeds and plants for a range of seasonal vegetables. (ongoing)
Sporting Competitions - EGA are involved in a range of sporting competitions both on and off site. (ongoing)
Play Ground Improvements - New playground markings added to both KS1 and KS2 yards to increase physical activity during break times. (Autumn 1 2021).

Change4life– 6 week programme working with children identified by SENDco- the sessions will encourage children to enjoy physical activity and inspire them to develop sporting values. They will also learn how to sustain a healthy lifestyle by learning about healthy foods and making positive food choices. This club is being developed across the school and aims to harness the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to engage children in physical activity and school through multi-sport activities. P4C/Zones of Learning - EGA provide opportunities to learn about positive well-being. (Ongoing)

Yoga - Delivered to whole school during ‘Yoga Week’ (Summer 2021)
Recycling
Clothes recycling - Fundraiserecycle LTD. Collection bin installed in KS2 yard November 2021. Eco Team
Christmas Clothing recycling - Families donate previously worn Christmas clothing which school sell for £1 to raise funds. (Autumn 2 2021)
Paper Recycling - Across all classes and school office. (November 2021. Eco Team)
Water Bottles - Children are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottle to school daily. (ongoing)
J & B Recycling Centre, Hartlepool - Eco Team visit planned for Spring 2022
Battery Recycling - Each class to recycle batteries from home. (September 2021 onwards)
Upcycling - Eco team currently making a class plant pot from recyclable materials. (Autumn 2 2021)

Litter
Local Councillor Mr Brash has spoken to the School Council about improving litter in the local area. He will deliver litter pickers to school (Autumn 2 2021)
Hartlepool Big Town Tidy Up - Some members of the Eco Team involved. Promoted through Social Media. (ongoing)
Rory in C13 has been busy cleaning up our local environment. So far, he’s collected 8 bags of rubbish for Hartlepool Big Town Tidy Up!

Water
Water Butt - Maintained and used water butt in the school garden. (Ongoing)
Water Meter - Eco Team will initially discuss the current water bill and suggest ways to improve water usage. (Spring 1 2022)

School Grounds

Tom and Leo have been growing their own strawberries and attracting bees into their garden.
They were given an oak tree sapling from Summerhill Country Park, Hartlepool to say thank you for all their hard work.
Rory (Y4) has been busy cleaning up our local environment. So far, he’s collected 8 bags of rubbish for Hartlepool Big Town Tidy Up and he’s still going strong!

Samuel and Esme Barker have recently joined 'Hartlepool Big Town Tidy Up' after finding lots of rubbish when walking their dog in the Burn Valley. They have since collected litter from The Burn Valley, Family Wood and Summerhill. That's amazing!
